If We Were Having Coffee… 1/28/17

If were were having a coffee date, I would hug you warmly and invite you in from the cold. We would sit and let the stresses of the week melt away over a hot beverage.

It has been a long week… or at least it seemed long. Whether that was due to work, lack of sleep, the shenanigans of our new president, the increasing political unrest, the increasing hostile nature of my social media feeds – or all of the above – I am unsure. I feel like I need a massage or a yoga session. I need some zen. Or a nap. A nap would be great. A vacation would be better.

I am beginning to wonder if I am going to be overextended at work in the coming months. My patient load continues to be heavy. I have a steady stream of residents that need teaching. I have two more fellows coming to observe. I also have two lectures for the OB/GYN fellows coming up. That means I need to plan the lectures, make slide presentations and (maybe worst of all) give the lectures. Since I can’t even get all of my work done in a 40 hour week, I know I will have to work on the lectures at home. I also bring regular work home on the weekends so I am worried about getting it all done. While the recruitment for another counselor has gone poorly, my supervisor is now considering hiring an assistant for me. I really hope that happens.

My older daughter was chosen for Junior National Honor Society this week. She had to fill out an application and she was selected based on grades, extracurricular activities and community service. I am SO proud of her, more than I can even express.

My Cadbury mini-egg detox continues. I have made it another full week Cadbury-free. My body craves them, though. I feel like a backslide is imminent.

This has been another week with little time for reading or writing. While this is typical, it still makes me feel sad. I am always trying to find ways to get more time but I never seem to. I feel discouraged. If you have any tips for fitting writing into a busy schedule, please share!

Catch me up. What would you tell me if we were having coffee?

  1. Make sure to get some rest! Surely life is just testing you. I know you’ll do well and you’ll handle the stress easily. 😉

Also, send my congratulations to your daughter. 🙂

  2. I’m truly in the same place you are with writing and reading! It makes me wish I rode the bus to work daily, but then, I’d probably be late for an evening activity. Reading in the bathroom is not much, but sometimes it’s better than nothing.

  3. I hear you with the writing. I don’t really consider myself to be a true “writer” but I enjoy coming up with short stories, but time never seems to be on my side. Not enough hours in the day – LOL. Best of luck with your writing and Congrats to your daughter. Hope your week ahead is a good one.

  4. Congrats on your daughter getting accepted into Junior National Honors Society! That’s very exciting. I hope you’re able to find some rest this week amid the craziness of life. 🙂

  5. I got Ghiardelli chocolates on clearance after Christmas. The ones that are little square shapes and are individually wrapped. If I had gotten all they had I would be happy but I would have eaten them all right away. I was good. I only got one little package. I think there were only about ten chocolate in the package. They are gone now. So no more. Maybe after Valentines Day I can find more on clearance. I’ll be good and only get one package, though.

  6. Holy Moly!! You are a busy woman! I wish I had some wise words to help you get through it all, but I don’t. Music always helped me. I had a half hour commute to work and I turned my music up and let the crap just go away. I think there is something in my brain that responds to the beat of music. If all else fails…….go for the Cadbury Mini-Eggs. Chocolate increases endorphins, right?

    1. I’m too busy. Ugh. Music is what I do during my commute. I have a couple of different spotify playlists based on my mood. I love music too so it is my go-to. Are you trying to make me fall off the mini-egg wagon??! ha ha

  7. I too am struggling with finding time to write, although reading does not seem to be a problem for me. I’ve got a short story almost ready to submit (and it’s been there since Christmas) and my novel stuck at first draft mode. It’s so frustrating. I feel your pain. Working in renewable energy I’m worried about the long term prognosis of my job under the current administration so maybe I’ll get lots of unexpected writing time soon…. know that I empathize with your situation but sadly have no answers for you. Congrats to your daughter!!!!
