If We Were Having Coffee… 3/26/17

Welcome! I’m so glad we could meet for coffee this week. I missed you last time. My apologies, life gets overwhelming at times. Come on in and have a seat. We’ve had some rainy, dreary weather this weekend. The temperatures have been moderate, though, so you can choose a hot or a cold beverage… whatever you’d like.

Since this is virtual and you can’t actually see my humble abode, I will tell you that we got a new front door. You would have to know what my old door looked like in order to realize why I am so excited. It was old and in bad shape. I’ve been wanting to replace it since we moved in. Now I have a brand new, modern beautiful door. It took my husband and my dad an entire weekend to install it. It has a glass panel so it lets in more light, a fact that I am still getting used to.

We’ve been quiet busy here with school and work and scouts. We spent most of the day yesterday peddling girl scout cookies. We did well but unfortunately still have some left. The end of the season is near, so we need to sell them so that we can get our full profit.

We have a busy April coming up. (sidenote: how in the everloving hell is it almost April?!!) We are planning a trip to South Carolina for Easter to visit family. We also have two other overnight trips for scouts in April. Our weekends are booked. On the one hand, I love being busy. We have some wonderful experiences planned for my girls. When I am busy, I feel productive. I feel alive. On the other hand, the packed schedule can become overwhelming. As an introvert, I need a lot of downtime that is quiet, peaceful and restful. Things can feel chaotic when I don’t get that time.

Operation Reduce the Sugar has been going surprisingly well. No more soda, I am drinking water 100% at work. I also drink water mostly at home, though I have had a little juice here and there. My work lunches have been healthier as well with more fresh fruits. My weakness is candy and cookies. We got rid of the candy in the house. If it’s not here I can’t eat it, right? The cookies are a different story but I have cut down on them. Confession: I did buy a bag of Cadbury mini eggs at the store last week in a moment of weakness. They are still on my nightstand unopened. That is willpower, friends. My rationalization is that they are seasonal (I can only get them for a short time) and 100% deprivation usually doesn’t work. Moderation is the key, right? As long as I don’t scarf down the entire bag in three days it is okay, right?

I did a little writing this week. I submitted a piece for Friday Fictioneers. Check out Isolated.

So, catch me up. What would you tell me if we were having coffee?

Thanks to Emily at Nerd in the Brain for hosting the Weekend Coffee Share (created by Part-time Monster)! Stop in and have a cup with our other participants at the linkup here.

  1. I hear ya on being busy, but needing downtime. I am on vacation this week and, though I have no real plans, I’m GIDDY at the thought of me time and doing whatever I want or nothing. Ahhhhh.

Congrats on the ditching soda! That’s tough. I had three Twizzlers for breakfast this morning, so I’m not the best one to talk about the candy issue. BUT! I will say this: When I crave a sweet treat, I eat unsweetened (go figure) applesauce in a lil’ Motts cup. That cuts the craving. Then if I have a sweet, I eat way less. That also works for food — eating applesauce (or apples) helps because they’re fibrous and make one feel full. Maybe that would work with the chocolate?

Hope you catch some YOU moments during your hectic time. And I get the fact that the earth spins and time flies, but yes, how is it APRIL?!?!?

  2. Wow! Good on you for showing those Mini Eggs who’s the boss!

Our front door is a hideous metal thing with a thin sheet of plastic that looks like wood. There’s a huge dent on the inside of the door like someone was trying to fight their way out by bludgeoning the door with their head. This is The Viking’s house and his priorities didn’t include a beautiful Front Door but eventually, when I don’t have anything left to beautify, I will tackle that door. :o)

    1. The front door certainly wasn’t a priority for my husband either. Ours was starting to get cracks so I convinced him it was a necessity. Those mini eggs call to me every day but I’m trying to be the boss!

  3. Reducing sugar is so hard! I applaud you for your efforts. Candy and cookies is a huge weakness for me as well and, while I’ve been making steps towards avoiding them, I’m not always successful. For example, when I read about you still having some Girl Scout Cookies left, my first thought was, “I’ll gladly take them off your hands! 🙂 Hope you have a great week and that you’ll find some time to rest. 🙂

    1. It is hard! And having the girl scout cookies in my house has been difficult, I’ve been trying to limit myself. Keep taking those steps. I’m not always successful either but any progress is good!

  4. Congrats on the new door! And on reducing your sugar (and having the willpower not to eat an entire bag of cadbury eggs!) About the eggs, though, I would recommend putting them in the freezer. That way you can have one when you want one and there’s no worry of them melting or being totally visible as a temptation.

  5. A new door sounds awesome! My front door is hanging on by a hope and a prayer! Lol. I’ve had my stepfather “fix” it twice. I purchased my home from my grandmother 9 years ago! It’s the same door. I wish you the best of luck on cutting down on the sweets. I also have a scout. I hate to say it but I’m pretty glad the session is coming to an end! Hopefully your troop can sell the rest of your inventory. Have a wonderful week!

    1. Well hopefully you can get a new door soon! We are very busy with scouts in April and May. So I have to say I will be ready for summer break. The girls are great but the troops are a lot of work. Have a great week!

  6. Bravo on nixing the soda… it soooo bad for you! As for the Cadbury eggs… I tell ya… that is strength. Only, my mother was once told by her doctor that is is better she scarf the whole bag in one shot and be done with it rather than eat them constantly day after day. For some strange reason they will go right through you. Now. This is not incentive to go ahead and then buy another… 😉
Good for you on the new door!
